Due to the volume of seasonal flu vaccine that needs to be given and staffing issues, seasonal flu vaccine will NOT be given in our District schools this year.

The Shawnee County Health Agency has chosen to hold community-based seasonal flu vaccine clinics this fall. Please watch for locations of clinics in the newspaper and on the local T.V. news.

As more information becomes available on the H1N1 vaccine we will share that with you.

Immunization requirements for the school year 2009-2010 (with revision of K.A.R. 28-1-20 and other State statutes pertaining to Immunizations the following may be helpful):

Tetanus Vaccine
Booster dose of Tdap now required at age 11. For 2009-2010 students with birthdates from 9-1-97 to 8-31-98 or will be 11 years old prior to September 1, 2009. Tdap is also required for all students older than 11 years of age who completed the DTap/DT/TD primary series ten or more years earlier. (The requirement states "Booster dose of Tdap is required at 11 years of age if more 2 years since previous dose.)

Varicella Vaccine (chickenpox)
Two doses are required for kindergarten; one dose required for grades 1-9 unless history of varicella disease documented by a licensed physician or the physician's authorized representative. (Two doses are currently recommended for all ages.) A provider of immunization services (i.e. Shawnee County Health Agency) may document history of varicella disease.

Hepatitis A Vaccine
Two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine will be required for those children in child care or preschool or child care program operated by a school who are less than 5 years of age. It is not required for entry to school for school-aged children or in child care situations.

Hepatitis B Vaccine
Three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine for students through grade 9.

All students will be required to have 3 doses of Hepatitis B and 2 doses of Varicella for the 2010-2011 school year.
Can students at WRHS carry medication?

Yes, according to Board Policy, students grades 9-12 at the high school may self-administer medication. If misuse is suspected, the privilege may be revoked.

When can a student return to school after being ill?

Students should be home for 24 hours after fever, diarrhea, nausea, and/or vomiting.

When can a student return to school after "pink eye"?

The prescribed eye drops need to be given for 24 hours before returning to school.

Why does a parent have to present immunization records to the school?

State of Kansas law K.S.A. 72-5209 requires that personal immunization records of students be presented to school authorities.

Why does a parent have to present a health assessment?

State of Kansas law K.S.A. 72-5214 requires all students entering school in Kansas for the first time under nine years of age to present a health assessment to school authorities.
